Peruvian Daffodil - the 3 week wonder!
$5.00 Bulb
Available
The fabulously fragrant Peruvian Daffodil is an exotic-looking, white wildflower native to South America. The petals of these trumpet-shaped blooms command many furls and unfurls, pairing well with the strappy, arching leaves. Easy to grow and simply striking in both the garden and the vase. Hardy in Zones 7-10, the Peruvian Daffodil is considered an annual in all other zones, but can be lifted and stored for planting the following year. (Hymenocallis festalis)
Full to Part sun, can be grown in the ground or in pots, rock gardens, flower beds, etc. Scapes are good for cut flowers and arrangements, or just to enjoy in your planted area. Flower scapes grow 12-24" tall.
Growing instructions:
Planting and care is very similar to amaryllis, but they can't be forced like an amaryllis.
Plant in spring after danger of frost, typically no earlier than May, and not later than end of June. Mature bulbs will typically bloom right around 3 weeks after planting. They can be planted in pots or directly in the ground. Provide water, but do not over water, especially in pots.
After blooming the bulb will need to remain in the ground/pot and continue to grow strappy leaves though out the summer.
I dig them in the fall, before any freeze. Dig deep enough to allow for the roots to remain intact, as they provide the nutrition for next year's bloom. Do not cut them off. Put the dry bulbs in a paper box or bag and store in a cool, dark basement. (We store ours in open wire racks 2-3 deep because we grow a lot of them.)
In the spring you get them back out and start the process all over again! I usually shuck off any dead materials to allow the bulb to get daylight more quickly, but don't know that it's absolutely necessary.
NOTE: Shipping is in spring through the end of June, and then again in the fall when we are digging them up to store for winter. If ordered in July or August, shipping will not be immediate.
